What are CSS counters?

CSS counters are “variables” maintained by CSS whose values can be incremented by CSS rules. They are used to track how many times they are used. Counters let you adjust the appearance of content based on its placement in the document and solve a wide variety of tasks in online documentation – from multi-level lists with complex numbering, to auto-numbering of screenshots in your user guide.
